After the degree summa cum laude in Chemistry in 1968, Gian Franco Tantardini started his research activity at the Institute of Physical Chemistry, and later at the CNR Centre for the Study of the Relationships between Structure and Chemical Reactivity. He became Associate Professor in 1987 at the University of Milan, and from 2000 Full Professor of Physical Chemistry.
At the University of Milan he was Director of the Department of Chemistry (2012-2014), of the Department of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry (2005-2012); member of the Board of Directors (2000-2006); member of the Commission for Scientific Research and Technological Transfer (2007-2011); representative in European Chemistry Thematic Network (1998-2010); Erasmus Coordinator for the Chemistry Courses (1997-2010);member of the C.N.R. Institute of Molecular Sciences and Technologies (2002-2014). Former President of the Computational Chemistry Group of the Italian Chemical Society (2000-2003).
Member of the Executive Committee of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Nanostructured Materials and Interfaces (2007-present); member of the Scientific Council of the ADAMSS (Advanced Applied Mathematical and Statistical Sciences); member of the Scientific Council of the Doctorate School in Chemical Sciences and Technologies.
He developed his scientific activity in the field of the Theoretical Chemistry and of the Computational Chemistry. He developed computer codes for ab initio studies of properties of molecular systems and dynamic simulations of chemical reactions that occur on surfaces of catalytic interest and on carbon-based innovative materials such as graphene and nanotubes.
